CodeBook V9 Now Links with Revit 2010 64-Bit

Bidirectional Linking a Project Database to a Building Information Model

Portsmouth, RI (January 13, 2010) - CDV Systems, Inc., implementation and training industry leaders for Autodesk Revit® and US Distributors of CodeBook, is proud to announce the most recent version of Revit 2010 64-bit Subscription Update now links with CodeBook V9. CodeBook® V9, a standalone database software tool, provides bidirectional linking of an MS Access project program, equipment and furniture database with a Revit 2010 64-bit model. Once linked, CodeBook allows the monitoring of design changes during the entire design and documentation process comparing the “required data” in MS Access to the “designed data” in Revit.

Parameter data can flow back and forth between programs allowing CodeBook to manage the project program, equipment and furniture needs while Revit manages the graphic data. CodeBook then outputs the data to Excel, Word or MS Access reports. Since a large portion of the project data is now in CodeBook, the demands on the Revit model are reduced, bringing the BIM file size down to a more manageable level. This is especially beneficial in reducing the file size of a Revit healthcare or laboratory projects.

“This new release of Revit’s Subscription Update was the key missing link in CodeBook’s API link to Revit,” says Cyril Verley founder and CEO of the Revit consultancy firm CDV Systems. “Now our clients can not only enjoy using CodeBook for their current list of projects, they can also enjoy a variety of new features V9 has to offer.” To get a better look at how CodeBook links with Revit, go to this link to view informational videos.

A History of Productivity

For the past twelve years, CodeBook linked to other CAD programs such as Autocad, ADT, Microstation and MicroGDS and has been used by architects, engineers, contractors and owners on projects world-wide. A Codebook case study was done for HOK for the Royal London Hospital: a 905 bed facility composed of two 20 story towers containing 6,225 rooms across 1.2 million sq ft of floor space with a total construction cost of $1 billion.

It was first announced in AEC Magazine in June, 2005 that CodeBook was to be used. “HOK worked with Autodesk and Codebook International to develop a link from ADT to Codebook utilizing the Area Object to push the room area data to Codebook.”  “Standards for many areas of the project were established using features such as ADT's Projector Navigator and databases were developed using Codebook.”

As the project came to a close, the 2007 Third Annual BIM Awards selected the Royal London Hospital’s project and HOK as the BIM award winner for Support for Human Use and Innovative Program Requirements Using BIM.

“While all these BIM implementation strategies and the benefits realized through them are undoubtedly impressive, what was really unique about the Royal London Hospital project was the integration of a software called Codebook, which encapsulates key government-sanctioned medical information and requirements. This software is linked to the principal BIM models, allowing the designers to constantly check that room layouts and services fulfill the requirements of medical need (see Figure 3). It is this integration of the program requirements into the design process, facilitated through BIM, that won the Royal London Hospital project the BIM Award for the category of Support for Human Use and Innovative Program Requirements Using BIM.

CodeBook has received other praise as well. “By using CodeBook for a design, the wealth of useful information it generates is also useful beyond the design and build portion of the project…” wrote veteran writer Martyn Day for the March/April 2005 issue of SOFTWARE REVIEW 22 AEC Magazine. “ The as-built information can then be used in the management of the finished building and used as a Facilities Management (FM) tool, as well as a master model for when refurbishment or refitting is required.”
